Okay, lower dpi is not necessarily mean more accurate because of scaling, therefor there IS such thing as too low a dpi, but you've decided to miss my entire point. i pity anyone who's work involves whipping the mouse back and forth across the monitor (or two or three). and i suspect a "lower dpi" is part of why they feel more accurate to people - you're focused on a smaller area of control. Thing about trackballs is once your muscle memory is locked in, you know exactly how hard to spin the ball to travel longer distances. You shouldn't have to move your mouse half an inch to get from one corner of the screen to the other.

A 1,600 dpi mouse on a 720p monitor works good, but on a 4k monitor I find a 3,200 dpi mouse to barely even cut the mustard, and changing the movement speed within the OS settings just decreases precision. This just seems like a bad idea, the dpi on those trackballs is very low.

The only digit I don't use for mousing/clicking is my pinkie finger, so none get overworked.

With a large ball in the center, you are distributing the effort of movement across multiple fingers and only clicking with your thumb (if you set your buttons up that way). I also found it less accurate and therefore slower for detail work than manipulating the larger ball with three fingers, but I know many people don't have that issue. I found that to get old really quickly, since I effectively shifted the pain and fatigue from my wrist and arm to my thumb which I'd never had a problem with before. ALL of your mousing movement is going to be done by that one finger.

One thing to consider about the thumb ball is that you are losing some of the ergonomic benefit of the larger center-mounted ball. They both have seen heavy use and still perform as they should. I still have the same two that I originally bought (for work and home). I started using Kensington Expert trackballs 15 years ago and never looked back.
